After an impressive Super Bowl season and a strong MVP push, Jalen Hurts was prepared to face new tests in the current season. The Eagles' quarterback has encountered unexpected challenges, with opposing coaches testing him with unconventional schemes that haven't been seen in game film.
Describing the situation, Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson referred to it as "Chaos." He praised the opposing teams for presenting looks that haven't been scouted, aiming to challenge the Eagles' offense in new ways.
“I think those guys have done a great job presenting looks that haven’t been on tape – looks that have been un-scouted — and trying to find new ways to challenge us as an offense,” Johnson said Wednesday. “That’s one of the things that we talked about, that defenses were going to try to adjust to what we’re doing. And you kind of see the evolution from ’21 to ’22 to ’23 of what focal points defenses use to try to take away from us offensively.”
The coordinators in New England attempted to stifle Hurts, but the Eagles managed to score 25 points. Similarly, the coordinators in Minnesota tried their best, but the Eagles recorded an impressive 34 points.
However, there have been challenges faced by Hurts. Opponents have been focused on limiting his running abilities.
Johnson acknowledged this issue, stating, “We just haven’t hit very many explosives with our running plays, If you go back and watch the tape, it’s really, really close. We just have to continue to strive to be better in all areas and continue to try to put our guys in the perfect situation.”
As Hurts continues to adjust, he faces a tough challenge against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night in Tampa. The Buccaneers are known for their strong defense, led by coach Todd Bowles.
“Well, they have great players,” Johnson said. “Coach Bowles does a great job of putting those guys in position to make plays and create big plays and to create tackles for losses. So just like any other week in the NFL, it’s going to be quite the battle.”
Despite the challenges, Johnson expressed pride in the team's ability to adapt quickly and find ways to use the chaos to their advantage. He believes Hurts is progressing and adjusting well to the changing defensive strategies.
As the season progresses, Jalen Hurts will undoubtedly face more tests and challenges. However, with his determination and the support of the Eagles' coaching staff, he is well-equipped to overcome and succeed.
